Cold curing. A cold-melt process.
Cold vulcanization is a chemical process used to bond and seal rubber-based materials, such as EPDM or other elastomers, without the need to apply heat. This method relies on chemical reactions activated by adhesives or special solutions, which allow the rubber to develop properties similar to those achieved by traditional hot vulcanization.
For bonding the overlaps of EDPM waterproofing membranes Hidrostan, adhesives are used that contain vulcanizing agents identified by the name AC221. This specific adhesive triggers a chemical reaction with the rubbery epdm material, creating durable bonds between the rubber molecules.
Unlike hot curing, which requires high temperatures (between 140 and 160 °C) and often leads to rubbery membranes becoming brittle, cold curing is carried out at room or slightly higher temperatures.Although slower than the hot process, cold curing still results in a strong and durable bond.
The advantages of a cold curing system are, operational simplicity, requiring no complex machinery or open flames, versatility, being able to use it anywhere, and safety by eliminating the risk of electrocution or fire.
AC-221 Glue has been specially formulated for bonding Butyl rubber and EPDM waterproofing membranes to each other and to substrates in construction such as concrete, brick, natural stone, cement and other types of materials.
When applying the adhesive of must provide a surface and clean and dry and free of hollows or protrusions. Do not apply the adhesive at ambient temperatures below 8ºC or in high humidity.
The adhesive glue should be spread with a brush or roller on both surfaces ( lower flap and upper flap. When finished, the solvent should be allowed to evaporate until the adhesive transfers to the touch (depending on environmental conditions, about 10 to 20 minutes). Bring the surfaces together without stretching the sheet, letting it fall naturally onto the substrate, pressing it down with a metal or rubber roller. The epdm membrane jointing system is combined with sealing using a shape memory mastic.
