DWALL® against Capillary Rising Dampness
Rising damp is still one of the main pathological problems in construction, with significant repercussions on the degradation of materials and the energy efficiency of buildings. The phenomenon is complex and requires a thorough understanding of the mechanisms that govern it in order to be solved definitively.
The level of water rise within a damp masonry is mainly influenced by the surface evaporation of the material. In a masonry that has capillary rising damp under equilibrium conditions-with the height of the wet spot stabilized, for example, at 50 cm above the ground-the amount of water absorbed from the soil is equal to the amount of water evaporating from the surfaces of the masonry itself.
DWALL® dehumidifying coating ensures the disposal of the moisture present in masonry thanks to its great evaporative capacity without being attacked by salts. This key feature distinguishes DWALL® from traditional rehabilitation systems, offering a solution that not only solves the problem but maintains its effectiveness over time.

DWALL® in Condensation Moisture Control and Mold Prevention.
All deterioration processes depend on the instability of the air-water-manufacture system, that is, on the amount and speed with which materials exchange water with the environment, based on their specific characteristics of porosity and hygroscopicity. In the growth of mold, it is not so much the moisture in the air as the moisture on the surface of the material that is decisive.
At first the spore reserves are sufficient to feed the young fungus, but soon it must find other sources of nutrition. Since it is unable to absorb the nutrients in its growth medium directly into its cells, the fungus secretes digestive enzymes that break down the substrate on which it is deposited, to transform it as far as possible into assimilable elements.
DWALL® dehumidifying coating provides higher surface temperatures and maximum vapor diffusion. In addition, due to its lime-based plaster with an extremely high pH (pH 13), it offers additional benefits in preventing mold growth, improving indoor air quality and contributing to environmental health over the years.

How the DWALL® System Works
-
DWALL® is configured as an advanced dehumidifying coating, the result of studies conducted on a scientific basis and based on rigorous criteria of compatibility, reversibility, ease of application, high breathability, effectiveness in salinity control and durability over time. It is designed for building masonry rehabilitation, restoration and conservation rehabilitation, ensuring maximum moisture migration with a vapor passage resistance value of μ3.
SB Bio Building sagl Group's experience in dehumidification has its roots in the late 1980s, with the first pioneering applications of dehumidifying plasters and direct entry into the production and formulation of materials. Research activities conducted continuously for more than a decade have enabled the definition of formulations so effective that they have been recognized as innovative elements in the panorama of building renovation materials.
However, the industry subsequently went through a phase of technological stagnation, which lasted for more than two decades, during which the gap between the real needs of the built environment and the technical offerings available on the market gradually widened. This scenario necessitated the initiation of a new path of innovation and research that led to the development of the DWALL dehumidifying coating.
-
DWALL® is a complete KIT that stands out for its exceptional technical restoration and rehabilitation characteristics. This system has been developed with innovative, high-quality materials that ensure effective resolution of problems related torising capillary moisture, condensation moisture that generates mold and unhealthy environments.
The system is composed of a Kit of specific products: an anti-salt, bedding or filling mortar and NOBILUM-THERMALPANEL, an insulating panel made of natural fibers of pure basalt rock with great vapor migration and breathability capabilities, complemented by a natural mineral finish on the outside with glass reinforcement in between. The system is fully reversible and espouses the philosophy of conservative restoration and rehabilitation.
DWALL® has one of the lowest elastic modulus found among building materials, a characteristic that promotes the absorption of micro-tensions that are the cause that generates cracks on the cortical layer of the finish. This technical property ensures the durability and aesthetic integrity of the coating over time.
-
In the preliminary analysis of the DWALL® system, the environmental pathology and history of the house are taken into account. This rigorous methodological approach makes it possible to accurately identify the causes of moisture problems and tailor the intervention to the specific needs of each building.
Dehumidifying coating is defined as such because it covers and beautifies degraded walls, being customizable as a finish. It is dehumidifying because it significantly improves the disposal of moisture inside the masonry. It is insulating because it functions as an underlying thermal insulator, providing tangible energy benefits.
-
In light of climate change, increased energy performance required of buildings, worsening environmental conditions-with increased air pollution, increased incidence of acid rain, thermohygrometric variations-and the current socioeconomic environment, it was deemed essential to rethink dehumidifying solutions in a systemic way.
SB Bio Building sagl's in-house research team, in synergy with specialists in the building and environmental sectors, undertook a project aimed at creating a dehumidifying coating that could combine high performance, environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
The characteristics of the DWALL® KIT make it unique because it combines innovation and tradition, connected by the fundamental principle of reversibility. This approach respects the canons of conservative restoration, allowing interventions that do not compromise the original structure of the building but significantly improve its performance.
-
The application of DWALL® in building restoration and rehabilitation works offers a number of significant benefits beyond simply solving moisture problems. The system actively contributes to improving the energy efficiency of buildings due to its built-in thermal insulation properties.
The dehumidifying action of DWALL® prevents the formation of mold and mildew in masonry, protecting not only the structure of the building but also the health of the occupants. Mold is often associated with respiratory problems and allergies, but thanks to DWALL®, the indoor environment becomes healthier and safer, acting as a true hygrometric thermo-regulator.
The anti-saline formula prevents the accumulation of salts in masonry, preventing damage caused by crystallization such as efflorescence and spalling. This feature is particularly important in coastal and lagoon areas or in buildings subject to water infiltration, where salts can cause irreversible damage to historic and modern masonry.
